Which Pet Care Chores Can Children Help with?

Dogs and cats are cherished family members, and involving your children in their care is a great way to teach them responsibility. However, understanding what responsibilities are suitable for different age groups is key to a positive and safe learning environment. Here’s how to tell what tasks are suitable for kids of certain ages.

Toddlers (Ages 2-4)

Toddlers should always be supervised when interacting with dogs and cats, but they can definitely participate in learning how to properly care for them. Some of the tasks you can share with your toddler include:

  • Feeding: With assistance, toddlers can pour food into bowls. You’ll need to measure out portions and ensure proper clean-up.
  • Walking: Toddlers should never get control of a leash, but they can accompany you on walks to build healthy routines.

Elementary School Age (Ages 5-9)

Older children can get more interactive, as long as they are taught how to perform the tasks properly. You can try:

  • Playtime: Have them throw a ball or dangle a cat toy.
  • Watering: Filling water bowls can be a daily task.
  • Brushing: With guidance, basic grooming skills can be introduced.

Pre-Teens (Ages 10-12)

This age group can take on more responsibility with their four-legged friends, especially if they have been steadily working with pets over the last few years.

  • Walks: Supervised walking of dogs or playing with cats in designated areas. Only give a child control of the leash if they have practiced in a fenced area.
  • Bathing: Assisting in washing, with parental oversight.
  • Feeding Control: Measure out food portions and maintain routine feeding schedules.

Caring for dogs and cats is a great way for children to learn responsibility, empathy, and compassion. If you’re not sure which pet care tasks are suitable for your kids, please feel free to contact your veterinarian for professional advice.
