Make These Health and Wellness Goals a Priority for Your Pets in the New Year

While you may be used to setting New Year’s resolutions for yourself this time of year, you can also set ones for your pet! Creating health and wellness goals for your pet for the coming year will help you prioritize and create a health and wellness routine to stick to all year long. Here are some health and wellness goals that should be a priority for your pet in the new year.

Maintain a Regular Exercise Schedule

Cats and dogs need regular exercise and play time to stay active and healthy and reduce their risk of obesity, diabetes, kidney problems, and cognitive issues. Try to take your dog for a walk once per day, and schedule 10-15 minute play times throughout the day for cats and dogs. Regular exercise and play will also reduce the risk of your pet developing behavioral issues like chewing, whining, accidents indoors, licking paws, and acting aggressive.

Make Dietary Changes

As your pet ages, his nutritional and dietary needs change. Visit your veterinarian annually to check in and make sure your pet’s dietary needs are still being met. If your pet has a vitamin or nutritional deficiency, he may act lethargic or disinterested in his normal activities. He may not want to eat, or he may overeat or constantly beg for food. He might also develop a urinary tract infection or have excessive urination, increased thirst, diarrhea, constipation, or symptoms of allergies.

Schedule Regular Veterinary Visits

Your pet should visit the veterinarian for a checkup at least once per year. Senior pets might need twice yearly visits. During these visits, your veterinarian will do a full physical exam and might take laboratory tests to confirm that your pet’s dietary needs are being met and he is in full health. You should also be aware of common signs and symptoms of illness in pets, as well as signs of a veterinary emergency.

Your pet should visit the veterinarian at least once per year for a checkup. If your pet hasn’t visited his veterinarian in the last 12 months, schedule a visit for the new year.
